Is there a difference between a construction project and an infrastructure project?

In most cases companies brand themselves as project management companies in the field of construction and infrastructure and it is clear that they are the same, but this is not the case with emphasis on multi-system projects where one company will not be able to take control of both but will require two ceo's who will work simultaneously and in collaboration to create a gantt for managing the construction project and the infrastructures that depend on each other.

But before we expand it is important to understand that construction project management and infrastructure project management may intersect at several stages in the project but there is one big difference between them. Infrastructure project management covers a wider spectrum of phases in the project, from planning to construction and ending with the statutory, regulatory and legal axis, finances and operations.

And to simplify the above, one of the main differences between construction and infrastructure is that construction usually focuses more on creating a new structure or improving an existing structure, while infrastructure is responsible for maintaining and supporting all the different systems in the area. And from here let's try to briefly go deeper into each one separately.

So what is infrastructure project management?

The central and decisive challenge in managing an infrastructure project is the ability to create a complex integration between dozens of professionals who depend on each other and includes the management of policies, concepts and processes, using mechanical and technological equipment, which will enable an empirical database in which the systems, human resources and personnel can be integrated The external connections necessary for the day-to-day operation, such as suppliers, service providers or security organizations, which are necessary to ensure that the operation of the building and its environment will function smoothly and efficiently (in light of this, advanced websites already require the recruitment of technologist professionals).

Managing the infrastructure the day after occupancy is the management of both technical and operational components that include policies, processes, data, hardware, software, data, facilities and equipment, all of this to create functional and business effectiveness and in many cases also to bring about efficiency and savings in the management of the infrastructure systems.

So how is construction project management different?

Construction management is a sub-field of the civil engineering profession that deals with the actual expenditure of construction projects. The main task in projects of this type is the management of the schedule, budget and quality of the project (which will also include the integration of the infrastructure layout in the building).

Coordinating and planning a construction project may be a complex task, because in projects of this type there is a combination of different systems that need to be trained together in order to carry out the project in a combination of dozens of different types of engineering consultants such as infrastructure consultants, safety, accessibility, fuels and more. .. and a board of professional consultants specializing in various issues such as acoustics, lighting, furniture, etc. To add to the complexity - the signing of the project is under control and under the complex instructions and bureaucracy of both the authorities and the regulators who will ultimately be the ones to issue the approval forms for the building to be occupied.

But even after we understood the challenge of the construction project manager, it is still not clear what is the difference between him and the infrastructure project manager?

The manager/ceo of the construction project will be the one who will complete the infrastructure and construction Gantt whether it is a mega project or whether it is a small project, excluding cases where infrastructure has a decisive part in the project with an emphasis on the day after, such as the construction of a nuclear site to generate electricity. It is important to clarify that in all cases there will always be an organized Gantt that will synchronize the construction stages and the stages of setting up the infrastructure and systems in the project so that they come in the right order and in the right synchronization.

At the end of each project Gantt there is a phase in which integration of all the systems in the building is produced, a phase in which the integration of the structure and the infrastructures and the mechanical and technological functionality of the structure can be examined and seen. This process is critical in order to create a simulated reality before occupancy both at the level of security of the occupants and at the level of safety and security that will be required in an emergency and in the ongoing operation of the building and we will elaborate on this in the next article.
